He didn’t know it yet, but Fergus had eaten his last cake off of the kitchen counter when I contacted Duke! We had tried group lessons and our own training efforts with no success, with every passing day we were feeling more hopeless and frustrated with Fergus’ behavior. Update on our little friend Chiklet, the pomeranian.
I thought I would drop you a line and let you know that Chiklet is doing fantastic! She is such a well behaved dog, and now that she is four she is starting to calm down a little bit. She will always be a high energy pup but with exercise, and other physical activity, she has a channel for her energy! Despite my hectic schedule I make sure that Chiklet gets outside for a long walk or run at least twice a day. This helps build the relationship between her and I, and allows her to get the satisfaction of exercise and obedience. Chiklet is a smart dog, and anticipates every challenge that I give her!
This may sound odd, but last year when I was graduating from UPEI your training program helped me pick Education as my next endeavor. The training techniques, and learning strategies, that you use to train dogs are not all that different than the ones I use in an eighty minute high school classroom. What you taught me about motivation and rewards is especially relevant to my B.Ed. Studies at UPEI. Who knew that teaching High School English and Creative Writing would be comparable to obedience training?
